Style Books That Have Shaped My Wardrobe

Fashion is a trend. Style lives within a person.
— Oscar de la Renta

Style inspiration can come from a ton of different places. When I was in high school, I looked to television wardrobe styling from shows like Gossip Girl. However, as much as I would like to think that I have the ability to dress like Blair Waldorf on a daily basis, that's just not realistic and headbands give me a massive headache. But I do still need to buy a replica of her peacoat poncho before I die. When I graduated from college, I quickly had to learn what my style was and how to put myself together.

Here are a few of the books that I've collected over the years that I turn to when in doubt about if my ankle boots work with my olive green skinny jeans or if at 25 I'm still allowed to wear a graphic t-shirt and ripped jeans. Something to keep in mind though when taking advice from style books is that what you're reading is just broad advice. You don't have to take everything you read to heart. You can take bits and pieces from books or articles that you read and only apply the ones that fit into your lifestyle. You have to know who you are and stand by your style choices, so if you're reading a style book that says you should never wear leopard print, but you feel most comfortable in your leopard print trench coat, wear it! No one can tell you to dress your own body. Unless it's Tim Gunn. Then you should really listen.
